Facing Shakelton Hardware at the southern end of the village is a broad
one-story building, its flat roof “supported” visually by small brackets. Now known as “Dorie’s,” it was built in 1920 to house a pharmacy and a notions shop owned by Mr. & Mrs. Martin W. Snyder. (Their previous businesses, located in Aurora’s central business district, were destroyed in the great fire of 1919.) Though presenting a single unified shape, the new building clearly indicated its dual purpose by offering separate entrances for each business: the pharmacy was located on the south, the notions shop (soft goods, fabrics, sewing supplies and so forth), were on the north.
“Dorie’s” is named after a later owner, Doris Reynolds, who ran a general store and ice cream counter there for fifty years. It was then acquired by Pleasant T. Rowland; the interior was completely renovated, Wi-Fi (and a soda fountain) installed, and a deck was extended on the back. It now belongs to Wells College.
